About Us

Boise State is a metropolitan doctoral university of distinction in the heart of one of the American West’s most thriving and safest mid-sized cities. With more than 22,000 students, it has the largest graduate school in the state of Idaho and grants about 46 percent of all bachelor’s degrees conferred by Idaho public universities each year.

Boise State’s longstanding mission to provide signature higher education experiences to students from Idaho and beyond, coupled with our and cutting-edge research program and dynamic graduate programs, work together to provide the academic opportunities and innovative solutions that modern economies in fast-growing Boise and the state of Idaho demand.

Our world-class faculty excel in the classroom, the field, the laboratory and beyond. Innovation and the kind of collaboration that transcends disciplinary boundaries are built into Boise State’s DNA.

Boise State’s trajectory is what truly sets it apart from its peers around the country. The university is serving more students, graduating more leaders, engaging more alumni and donors and producing more research and scholarship than ever before. A study showed just two other universities have maintained the same kind of steady and steep growth in graduate programming over the past two decades.

When the British strategic consulting firm Firetail evaluated universities around the world, it named just 20 “Rising Stars” that are best positioned to challenge the higher education establishment on a global scale. Boise State was among this elite group.

With the recent creation of the College of Innovation and Design, a unique entity built to transform how Boise State meets the needs of our students and our partners, this trajectory is showing no signs of slowing down.

Boise State is “demonstrably on
the move.”

About Boise, Idaho

It can seem like there may not be a single reason nearly 700,000 Idahoans call this metropolitan area their home — but there are just too many reasons to count.

Boise is frequently called one of America’s best cities to live in. Recently, it has been touted as one of the best cities for families, one of the best cities for jobs, one of the best cities for both millennial startups and millennial entrepreneurs. It has been called one of America’s safest cities, one of its healthiest cities, one of its hottest music cities. Boise has been called one of the greenest cities in America, one of the best college football towns in America… you get the picture.

A thriving high-tech industry drives the city’s economic engine. And as diverse Idaho-based companies over the decades like Albertsons, Micron Technology, Morrison-Knutsen, the J.R. Simplot Co. and others clearly illustrate, success and growth are common here.

Boise State is Boise’s university, and our students, faculty and graduates play key roles in the city’s economy, its culture, its civic life and its vibrant arts community.
